Current Chandpur was included in the Samatata kingdom in ancient Bengal. Evidence of ruling this region by the kings of Gupta Pala and Sen Dynasty of ancient Bengal has been found too. Until 1960 AD the name of the district was Tripura. The district was composed of 4 subdivisions then, which included the north and south headquarters, Brahmanbaria and Chandpur.
In 1878 this region was established as a subdivision. It was recognized as a full district in 1984. In this district of 1704 sq km area, there are eight sub-districts, seven municipalities, and seventeen unions.
The district has natural beauty, delicious food, and ancient history. In addition to the historical monuments and the famous culture, the district has spectacular scenery, natural beauty, delicious food, and friendly people. Therefore, this district is a wonderful place to visit.
Chandpur has distinct fame for ancient mosques and monuments. Among the historic sites, the Jame Mosque of Hajiganj, the ruins of Nilkuthi in Sahebganj, Lohagor abbey, Hazrat Sayed Shah Rasti (R) tomb & mosque are worth visiting.
