Tourist Attractions in Faridpur
Faridpur district is an administrative unit of Dhaka division in central Bangladesh. It is bounded by Rajbari and Manikganj districts on the north, Gopalganj on the south, Magura and Narail districts on the west, and Dhaka, Madaripur, and Munshiganj districts on the east.
This region is very well known as the home of many saints, politicians, and religious people. The old name of this region was 'Fathabad'. The area was named after Shah Farid (RH), the disciple of the famous saint Khwaja Mainuddin Chishti (RH).
This area played a major role in the anti-British movement. Haji Shariatullah started the Faraizi movement from Madaripur which was a significant movement against the British rulers then. The anti-indigo tax movement was led by Dudu Miah, son of Shariatullah. The district's main indigo factory was located in Mirganj of Alfadanga sub-district. There were about 52 indigo factories located throughout the district. Indigo cultivation was done on the banks of Gorai, Madhumati, and Barashia.
Faridpur is one of the oldest districts in the history of Bangladesh that was formed during the British era. Greater Faridpur was divided into five different districts in 1984; those are Faridpur, Rajbari, Gopalganj, Madaripur, and Shariatpur. The district town is situated on the bank of the river now. The municipality was formed in 1869.
One of the most popular places of interest in this district is the home of the famous Bengali poet Jashimuddin. He has made a great contribution to Bengali literature. The residence and the graveyard of the poet are located in central Faridpur and are being used as a memorial now. Various items used by the poet and some famous writings are displayed in the house as exhibits of the memorial.
Some other places to visit in this district are Gheda Mosque (1013 AH), Pathreel Mosque and pond (1493-1519 AD), Satiar Mosque (1519 AD), Fatehabad Mint (1519-32 AD), the Wall of Mathura, the District Judge Court Building (1899 AD) and the broken court building (1889 AD), the Basudev Temple and the Jagbandhu yard.
