Tourist Attractions in Jhalokati
Jhalokati is a district in Barisal division of southern Bangladesh. The total area of this district is 758.06 sq km. Barisal district is on the north-east of Jhalokati, Barguna and Bishkhali rivers on the south, and Pirojpur district on the west.
This region was earlier included in Barisal district. Jhalokati has always attracted Europeans for the river port. As a result, the East India Company, Dutch and French opened business centers at different times in this area. For commercial importance, it was called the Second Kolkata. In February 1984, Jhalokati sub-district was turned into a full-fledged district for administrative purposes, from Barisal district.
The District is famous for some unique industries in Bangladesh, such as the traditional cool mats, looms and pottery. Cool Mats (Shitol Pati) industry is almost three hundred years old in this area. It was used to be one of the main sleeping and sitting mats. These are still being utilized in the rural areas of Bangladesh. This region was also famous for pottery when most of the home utensils were made of clay. Nowadays potters make many different items with clay along with the useful utensils.
This district is a place of interest nowadays for the travelers, especially in the rainy season (July-September). In the rainy season, Guava planters gather in the riverside markets to sell their products carrying them in small paddle boats. The gatherings of the boats make the entire place a floating market. Travelers from all over Bangladesh come to see this massive market where the deal is done mainly on the boats.
Other than the floating markets, some other places of interest are worth visiting while in Jhalokati. Old Municipal Building, Hazrat Daud Sha Tomb, Mia Bari Mosque, Kirttipasa Palace, Sujabad Fort are some of the attractions of this district.
