Tourist Attractions in Khulna
Khulna is a district located in the southwestern part of Bangladesh under the Khulna division. The divisional headquarters of Khulna is located in this district. Jessore and Narail surround it on the north, the Bay of Bengal on the south, Bagerhat on the east, and Satkhira on the west. In this district of 4394.46 sq km, there are nine sub-districts, two municipalities, and 68 unions.
Khulna was the first subdivision of the British regime established in 1882. Before the administrative reform in 1983, it was the 3rd largest district of Bangladesh.
The district is the witness to various historical events in Bangladesh. According to history, it is found that Shamsuddin Firoz Shah (1310-1325) first came to Khulna. During the rule of Shamsuddin Iliyas Shah (1342-1358), the Muslims arrived in this region. Then Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (RA) introduced Muslim rule in this area.
Although the official date of independence of Bangladesh was on 16th December 1971, Khulna was still occupied by the Pakistan army. Later, on the 17th of December, the Pakistan army surrendered at the Circuit House ground, and then the area was free.
Another historic event in this district is the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi in 1926 to support the Swadeshi Movement.
The district has many historical monuments, relics, and ancient mosques that are great places to visit. It also contains the largest mangrove forest in the world – the Sundarbans. Some other attractions are the Khulna Divisional Museum, Banbilash Zoo, Rupsa River, etc.

The district is accessible directly by road, rail, and waterways. It takes about 7-8 hours by bus/car, 9 hours by train, and about 9-10 hours by engine boat. There is no airport in this district but can be reached by air via Jessore which is about a 2-hour drive.
